Basics
Hosting
If you are just starting out you may want to try free hosting services such as angelfire or geocities. They are quite easy to set up and contain tutorials + of course they are free. The disadvantage is that they impose advertising on your site which can be quite intrusive. Websites on free hosts sometimes take longer to load up than those on payed hosts. Domain Names
Your domain name should be: easily pronouncable, short, easy to spell and letters only. It should be memorable and keyword rich.
File Names
Apart from your overall site the names for your individual pages should also be relevant keywords.
Meta Tags
For the sake of your search engine placement you should include the following in the Head section of your HTML.
Replace the "_________" in the title tag with a good keyword rich title.
Replace the "_________" in the description tag with a good keyword rich description. This may be displayed in the search engine results so make it read well.
Replace the "_________" 's in the title tag with keywords and phrases which you think potential visitors will search for.
Loading Time
The loading time of your index page is important. Keep the page under 40k or a lot of surfers may move on before your page loads.
Don't overload it with slow loading pictures
Study HTML so you can cut out unnecesary code. Every byte of information adds a tiny bit to the loading time. Even the length of page names etc make a small difference. It all adds up!
A Links Page
I suggest that you add a Links Page to your site. A list of relevant links with descriptions counts as valuable content and you will have a place to put your link swaps if you want to really promote your site.
